10 January 2026 – What have I learned today? Psalm 7 verse 17 (NIV)

I will give thanks to the LORD because of his righteousness;

   I will sing the praises of the name of the LORD Most High.

There is a multitude without number of things that we can give thanks to God for. We can think of the old hymn – “Count your blessings, name them one by one, and it will surprise you what the LORD has done.”

But in particular today this verse in Psalm 7 caught my attention. David tells us that we need to give thanks to the Lord because of His righteousness and that got me thinking why.

God is righteous – that means His word and His promises can be trusted. It means He is just and fair. It means He will never let us down. Surely then, when we consider this, and what this means for us, we have no problem in taking the time to stop and give God thanks and praise for His righteousness.

Dear Lord,

I am overwhelmed by Your righteousness when I think that my righteousness is like filthy rags. But I give You praise and thanks that I can rely and completely trust You because You are righteous. Thank You from a grateful heart. Amen.
