12 August 2025 – What have I learned today?

Ecclesiastes chapter 5 verse 1 (NIV)

Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools, who do not know that they do wrong.

Psalm 122 verse 1 (NIV)

I rejoiced with those who said to me,

“Let us go to the house of the Lord.”

What do we expect when we go to God’s House every week? Do we go out of duty, or even habit? Or do we go prepared, as we should, expecting to hear from God? If we go with that attitude we will not be disappointed, because God sees our heart and He will surely speak to us if we are open to respond.

It’s easy to arrive at church harassed and not quite in the right attitude of mind. But we need to remember whose house we are going to. God is waiting there for us.

I have been fortunate to attend the King’s Garden Party at Holyrood Palace. Instructions were sent out about how guests were to dress and behave on arrival. No one invited would fail to comply with protocol. So neither should we treat lightly the time we spend in the House of God. It’s an honour and a privilege.

Dear Lord,

May I always have the same attitude as David when I come to church, remembering that it’s a special place and opportunity to spend time with You. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
