Matthew Chapter 11: Verses 2-6 (NIV UK Translation)

When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to ask him, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’

Jesus replied, ‘Go back and report to John what you hear and see: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.’

John the Baptist fulfilled his calling, later in the chapter Jesus commends him as the greatest prophet, but that doesn’t mean he had an easy life. Here he faces his final days in prison. Is it any wonder he had a bit of a wobble in his faith? Jesus sent John’s followers back to him with a list of signs to take encouragement from, and tells him to hold on.

When things don’t seem to be going as we expect them to, especially if it’s related to something we thing God is telling us to do, we too can have doubts. Jesus didn’t say following Him would be easy, after all he didn’t have an easy life either. But we need to hold on to the promises God have given, and remember all He has done for us thus far. A time of trial doesn’t always mean we’re on the wrong road, but unless God tells us to, it doesn’t mean we turn around and go back, or that we put the brakes on. Jesus sent an encouragement to John. He’ll give encouragement to us too.

Dear Lord,

John sent word to You when he was struggling in hard times. I can come to You too when I am having a hard time. Help me to persevere and keep walking the way You want me too. I ask in Jesus’ Name.

Amen.
