15 December 2024 – What have I learned today?

Malachi chapter 2: verse 17 (NIV)

You have wearied the Lord with your words. “How have we wearied him?” you ask. By saying, “All who do evil are good in the eyes of the Lord, and he is pleased with them” or “Where is the God of justice?” It was the word “weary” that caught my attention today, and funnily enough, immediately after this, the Pastor used the word in part of his sermon when he quoted the line, “a thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices…” from the Christmas hymn – ‘O Holy Night.’ It was a reminder of how Christ came to bring hope to a weary and jaded world.

Yet Malachi reminds us that its possible for us to weary God Himself. How? By what we say. God isn’t interested in eloquent speech or fine promises. He wants obedience and service from us. He wants that relationship with us that Jesus died to bring us. We know the saying that “actions speak louder than words” so let’s bring pleasure to God by our obedient actions rather than our fancy words.

Dear Lord,

I’m so amazed that even though we must weary You with our behaviour, You never give up on us. Help me to always seek to please You by doing what You ask. I pray in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
