15 February 2025 – What have I learned today?

Exodus chapter 17 verses 12-14 (NIV)

When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset.  So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword. Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven.”

Although this was just the start of the journey, God knew everything that lay ahead over the next forty years, including the fact that it would be Joshua who would ultimately lead the people into the promised land and he would face many more battles, including against the Amalekites, so God wanted this battle to be recorded as an encouragement for Joshua when he faced these battles in the years to come.

Sometimes God reveals His plans to us for a future time, and sometimes not. But He often brings back to our remembrance the things that He has done for us in the past to remind us that we can be confident that He will once again move on our behalf. It was forty-five years ago today that I made the commitment to become a Christian, and I too can look back today and see how His hand has undertaken for me for all these years. Many experiences I too have put on record so that I can remember them. We also have the benefit of hindsight because we have the Bible which shows us how things worked out for Joshua. Thus, we know that God keeps His word and He will do the same for us.

Dear Lord,

I am grateful for the fact that You are steadfast and that You keep Your hand on our lives and fulfil all Your promises, even if they don’t seem to come to fruition as quickly as we would sometimes like them to. Thank You for Your guiding hand and care on my life for all of these forty-five years. Amen.
