Psalm 126 verse 6 ( NIV)
Those who go out weeping,
carrying seed to sow,
will return with songs of joy,
carrying sheaves with them.
This is a very familiar verse. But I don’t think I’ve ever taken the time to properly consider it – until today.
What struck me is that even in the first half of this verse, the weeping is not without purpose; those who go out weeping do so with intent – they are carrying seeds to sow, and those tears will bed in and water the seed, so that in the fullness of time the seed will grow and bear fruit.
When we feel despair about someone, and we feel that they are not listening, our tears can have purpose, they are not for nothing. If we pray with that sense of purpose, we can ask God to make the seed fall on ground where it can take root and grow.
What we do need to remember however is that there will be time between the planting and the harvest. That way we will not be tempted to give up before the appointed time.
Dear Lord,
Help me to remember that your timing is perfect. When I don’t see growth as quickly as I hoped, particularly in those I love, help me to persevere, even with tears, knowing that I can leave you to do the germinating of the seed. Amen.
