16 February 2025 – What have I learned today?

Mark chapter 1 verses 40 – 42 (NIV)

A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” Jesus was indignant. He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!”  Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.

I have often wondered about what made Jesus so indignant in this account. I think we need to remember that the man with leprosy would have been cast out from society. He would have had to risk even approaching Jesus and have to have had great faith that he wouldn’t be turned away. So, I wonder perhaps if Jesus saw those around recoil as the man approached. Touching him would make anyone ceremonially unclean. Perhaps the attitude of others was what caused Jesus to be indignant? He certainly showed the man compassion and understanding.

How do we react perhaps when someone with a past comes into our fellowship? Is it obvious that we disagree with their behaviour if they don’t conduct themselves in church the way that we would expect? Do we give them a bit of a wide berth at the end of the meeting, or are we willing to extend the hand of fellowship and support as Jesus would expect us too? I hope so.

Dear Lord,

I’m grateful for Your kindness and compassion and the fact that You break down barriers and show no favouritism. Help me never to show unfavourable bias or opinion and reflect the same compassion and kindness to all who come seeking You as You have shown to me. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
