Mark Chapter 2: Verses 23-24 (NLT)
One Sabbath day as Jesus was walking through some grainfields, his disciples began breaking off heads of grain to eat. But the Pharisees said to Jesus, “Look, why are they breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath?”
People must have been watching Jesus and His followers all the time, especially those who wanted to catch Jesus out. On this Sabbath Jesus and His friends were simply out walking, and the Pharisees who saw them still managed to find something to criticise.
We need to be aware that once people are aware that we have decided to follow Jesus, some people will be watching us all the time too. Some people will want to see if they can catch us out, others will simply want to see if our lives are really any different. That’s why we need to remember that as an ambassador for Jesus, we are never “off duty”. Being a Christian is not meant to be for a Sunday, or when we’re in Church. Our behaviour might put people off finding out about God, or in some cases encourage them to start their own journey.
Dear Lord,
I thank You that Jesus was always ready to explain the truth to people whenever the opportunity arose, and those who tried to catch Him out were always taken by surprise themselves. Help me to remember that He also told the disciples to let their light shine, and therefore so must I. I ask all of these things in Jesus’ Name and so that You may be glorified. Amen.
