17 February 2025 – What have I learned today?

Exodus Chapter 22 verse 28 (NIV)

Do not blaspheme God or curse the ruler of your people.

2 Timothy chapter 2 verses 1-4 (NIV)

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

Most Christians would tell you, and rightly so, that they would never blaspheme. But I’m sure many of us, whilst not cursing those in authority over us, may well have voiced at least strong opinion or criticism over their action or behaviour. Paul tells Timothy that this is not how Christians should conduct themselves. We are told that we need to pray for them. It’s something God is reminding me of more often because, to my shame, it’s something I’m not as faithful in doing as He expects me to be. Paul uses the word urge when issuing this instruction. It shows how important it is and should indicate to us that its much more than simply just a nice thing to do.

Dear Lord,

Forgive me for so frequently overlooking the instruction to pray for those in authority. Help me to be faithful in this. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
