17 October 2023 – What have I learned today?

1 Timothy Chapter 2: Verses 9-10 (NIV)

I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

There can be a great deal of pressure, particularly on young people, about the way to dress, how and what we wear- the “right clothes”, perhaps designer brands for example. Some people can handle that pressure better than others.

Paul told Timothy to remind the ladies in his congregations that how they dressed and how they looked was not the most important thing. It was what they did for God. As Christians we are meant to be ambassadors for Christ, pointing people to Him, not drawing attention to ourselves. Paul mentions more than once in his letters about clothing ourselves with Christ. In the book of Ephesians in particular, he tells the church, “… to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” That’s far more important than wearing the latest designer shoes, and frankly, much less pressure.

Dear Lord,

I’m grateful that You are much more interested in what’s going on in my heart than in the way I look. Likewise, help me not to judge someone by their outer appearance. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
