18 December 2024 – What have I learned today?

Psalm 145 verses 3-4 (NIV)

  Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise;

   his greatness no one can fathom.

  One generation commends your works to another;

   they tell of your mighty acts.

Whilst out for lunch with Christian friends earlier this week, we were discussing how many elderly people in care homes could truly enter into times of singing in outreach services at their Homes, because we tend to sing the songs and hymns they may have learned as children in Sunday school. Even if they have forgotten other things, the familiar words and tunes often come flooding back from the depths of their memory, bringing them great comfort and joy. Even I can remember with happy thoughts sitting on my grandpa’s knee listening to bible stories.

However, sadly, we speculated what would happen to many of today’s younger generation who don’t have that background and teaching to fall back on. Thus, the commendation from this psalm that we commend the works and teachings of God to the next generation is so important. How else are they going to know?

Dear Lord,

Help me to treat the teaching of Your ways to the younger generation as the privilege that it is, and to do so wisely and under Your guidance. I pray in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
