18 September 2025 – What have I learned today?

Galatians chapter 4 verses 16-18 (NIV)

Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth? Those people are zealous to win you over, but for no good. What they want is to alienate you from us, so that you may have zeal for them. It is fine to be zealous, provided the purpose is good, and to be so always, not just when I am with you.

Colossians chapter 3 verse 24 (NIV)

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters…

Paul was warning the Galatian church of the danger of following a man made version of the truth. There were those in the church who were laying down their own rules and regulations, and teaching that you couldn’t be a true Christian unless you followed those particular  rules. Paul reminded them that Jesus’ sacrifice had set them free from legalism, yet some of the church had taken offence at what he said. He taught them that it was okay to be zealous for the things of God, if we are doing what God, is telling us to do by the guidance of the Holy Spirit. He reminded them that it’s not OK for something that is dressed up as spiritual, but is in fact a work of man. He also reminded the Colossians Church just who it was they were serving.

Sadly, even today we need to be so careful about the things that are being circulated on the Internet, and also publicised by those who claim to be in leadership, or those who call themselves “Christian influencers”, particularly since the death of Charlie Kirk last week, who was one such influencer.

I was concerned to see reels on Instagram by some people saying that if their Pastor didn’t mention Charlie Kirk last Sunday morning, they should leave and find another church. They were even inviting people to write the names of churches  who honoured the man, as a recommendation of where to go. We  need to sit under those who honour God above all else, not man. It should not matter what our political views are, unless they are contrary to Christ’s teaching.

Dear Lord,

You reminded me yesterday of Your goodness and loving kindness. In these days where there is danger of being zealous for other things, help me keep my eyes focused on Jesus, the author and finisher of my faith. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
