2 April 2025 – What have I learned today?

Luke chapter 9 verses 10-11 (NIV)

When the apostles returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida,  but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing.

I can imagine the excitement and joy in the hearts of the disciples as they returned, looking forward to  telling Jesus all they had seen and experienced, and so it appeared that the plan was for them to withdraw with Him and spend time together. Maybe they hoped He would share more teaching with them about what would happen next. I’m sure they would have been on a spiritual “high” but also looking forward to that intimate, personal time with Him. The crowd had other plans though and they didn’t get the opportunity. Nonetheless, Jesus welcomed the crowd and met the needs of all who came. Perhaps the disciples were disappointed at this change of plan. I think I would have been. Maybe that’s why later in this chapter they were so keen for the crowd to be sent away. Yet, because of this change of plan they were able to witness and be part of a mighty miracle, where Jesus showed that He could take a little and multiply it for His glory, when many thousands were fed utilising five loaves and two fish.

How do we react if plans for something we have looked forward to are changed? Are we disappointed and upset? Perhaps through the change of plans, God wants us also to see His hand moving in the very circumstances we now find ourselves. Jesus welcomed the crowds. He didn’t get grumpy, fed up, or annoyed. I think I need to remember that verse, “Jesus welcomed the crowds…”next time my hopes or plans are dashed and wait to see how God will use the changed circumstances for His glory.

Dear Lord,

Thank You for this reminder from Jesus that sometimes our own hopes and desires need to be put aside so that You can outwork Your plans, which are better and higher than mine. Help me also to be mindful of my attitude, so that I can respond as Jesus did if I find myself in that situation. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
