20 May 2026 – What have I learned today?

John Chapter 11 verses 45-48 (NIV)

Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in him. But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin.“What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”

Those who had seen the miraculous event of Lazarus’ resurrection had different responses. We don’t know what those who went to the Pharisees expected, but I think the response of the leaders at the time is very telling. The first recorded words are not those of praise and thanks for this wonderful miracle, but rather concern for themselves and their own position. “What are we accomplishing?” There is no thought for God in their response, or even seeking His mind on the matter.

Its a sad reflection of our times that many people think that the most important thing is to look after themselves first and foremost. Surely our first thought in any time of crisis, but also at anytime really is to seek God’s mind in our situation so that we can accomplish His plans, under His direction. After all we are well aware that His plans are higher and better than ours.

Dear Lord,

Help me always to remember that my desire should always be to see Your plans out worked and not mine. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
