Proverbs chapter 23 verses 17-18 (NIV)
Do not let your heart envy sinners,
but always be zealous for the fear of the LORD.
There is surely a future hope for you,
and your hope will not be cut off.
As I read these verses, it struck me that although Christians can at times be envious of some who don’t share their faith, they can also at times be envious of other Christians.
If someone receives a blessing from the Lord, do we rejoice with them, or is there a small part of us that wishes it was us? Are we content with our lot and whatever work God has asked us to do, or do we quietly covet a different gift?
Paul told the Philippians church that he had learned to be content in all circumstances. (Philippians 4:11-13) and so should we. For as we are told in verse 18 of today’s reading, we have a future hope that can’t be cut off. Surely that is something to be content with.
Dear Lord,
Help me to ensure that if I am jealous, it is for You to be glorified. Help me to learn to be content in every circumstance. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
