22 April 2026 – What have I learned today?

Luke chapter 21 verses 5-7 (NIV)

Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said,  “As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down.” “Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?”

1 Samuel chapter 15 verse 22 (NIV)

But Samuel replied“Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.”

Herod’s Temple at the time of Jesus was a magnificent building, although nowhere near as grand as Solomon’s Temple. The disciples couldn’t imagine it not being there. It was after all dedicated to God. But Jesus warned them otherwise. God no longer dwelt there. The focus would be different in future. Christ, through the Holy Spirit, would soon dwell within them.

What can we not imagine living without in our Christian life? A building? A person? A denomination? For nearly 40 years, I believed that my path was set, and my Christian “home” would always be there. But, like Israel, through not being completely obedient to God’s direction, that door was shut.

But God is good and gracious. His Spirit has not departed. However, we must always walk in obedience and make His will our focus. If we put store in anything else, even if it seems to be dedicated to God, then it will eventually pass away.

Dear Lord,

You have said that what matters most is a willing heart and total obedience. Lord then may my heart be always willing to obey. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
