22 November 2023 – What have I learned today?

Psalm 131: Verses 1-2 (NIV)

My heart is not proud, Lord,
    my eyes are not haughty;
I do not concern myself with great matters
    or things too wonderful for me.
 But I have calmed and quieted myself,
    I am like a weaned child with its mother;
    like a weaned child I am content.

It’s easy to look at everything that’s going on in the world and despair because there is much that we ourselves can do very little about. David was a King with great power and authority, but we see in these verses that he too recognised that there were things out with his control. That may be hard for us to accept, but we would be wise to follow David’s example.

That doesn’t mean that we don’t care about what’s going on round about us. We bring the things that concern us to God in prayer and learn to leave them with Him. He, after all is able to deal with them better than us. He expects us to act under His direction, and trust everything else to Him. That takes the pressure off us trying to achieve the things we can’t do, and lets us take direction and guidance about those we can, and do those to the best of our ability.

Dear Lord,

Help me to seek Your guidance about the things I need to concern myself with and leave the rest to You. But help me to do the things You want me to wholeheartedly and to the best of my ability. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
