23 December 2024 – What have I learned today?

Nehemiah chapter 2: verse 11-12 (NIV)

I went to Jerusalem, and after staying there three days I set out during the night with a few others. I had not told anyone what my God had put in my heart to do for Jerusalem. There were no mounts with me except the one I was riding on.

Nehemiah chapter 2 verse 16 (NIV)

The officials did not know where I had gone or what I was doing, because as yet I had said nothing to the Jews or the priests or nobles or officials or any others who would be doing the work.

When God gives us a calling, or a job to do, we can feel many things including anticipation and excitement. After all, its an honour to be used of God. So, in our excitement we can be tempted to want to tell everyone what we have been called to do. Sometimes that’s the right thing to do, but there are other times when we need wisdom and discretion about when to share what we’re doing. The advent of social media has meant that many people share information straight away when perhaps it would have wiser to wait. If we feel that check in our spirit, we know we would be best to hold our tongue, at least for the moment. We can always trust that God knows what He is doing, and we don’t want to rush ahead of Him.

Dear Lord,

I ask for wisdom and discretion to know when to speak and when to be quiet, to know when to act and when to have the patience to wait, even although I may be desperate to go ahead. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
