24 April 2023-What have I learned today?

Luke Chapter 22: Verses 31-32 (NIV)

“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat.  But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”

Luke Chapter 22: Verses 60-62 (NIV)

Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed.  The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.”  And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Jesus knew that Peter was going to crumble and told him so. But He also told Peter that He had prayed for Him, and that Peter wouldn’t lose his faith. When Jesus turned and looked at Peter, I don’t think it was in anger or reproach, or even “I told you so.” I think it was to say, “I love you, Peter. Remember I have prayed for you.”

We mess up too, and Jesus knows that, but He also still loves us. When this happens, we need to remember that Jesus has also prayed for us. He wants us to return to Him, and not to stay away because of our guilt, shame or embarrassment. When we repent, the slate is clean. That’s what grace is.

Dear Lord Jesus,

Thank You for not giving up on us, but praying for us. Help me never to stay away in guilt or shame when I feel I have let You down, but to come to You with a repentant heart. Your grace just amazes me. Thank You. Amen.
