Mark Chapter 8 verses 1-5 (NIV)
During those days another large crowd gathered. Since they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way, because some of them have come a long distance.” His disciples answered, “But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?” “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.“Seven,” they replied.
We don’t read here that Jesus was disappointed in His disciples response, but I’m sure He would have been at least hoping as He questioned them, that they would recall a similar situation some months before, when they’d seen 5000 men fed, along with women and children. Their responses however, appear to suggest otherwise. Yet He doesn’t reproach their poor memory, or their lack of faith. The verses which follow report that 4000 men, along with women and children, were fed.
But I can’t criticise the disciples. I too can think of times when the Lord has had to remind me of things He has said to me. I know that I can get disappointed if I think someone has forgotten something of importance that I have told them. After all that Jesus has done for me, I hate to think of disappointing or hurting Him because I have not held on to what He has told me.
Dear Lord,
I am sorry for how quickly I have at times forgotten what You have shown me. Help me to be more like Mary and treasure all of these things in my heart. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
