25 October 2024 – What have I learned today?

Psalm 119: verses 10-12 (NIV)

The wicked have set a snare for me,

   but I have not strayed from your precepts.

Your statutes are my heritage forever;

   they are the joy of my heart.

My heart is set on keeping your decrees

   to the very end.

Today it was the word “heritage” that grabbed my attention in this portion of Psalm 119.  Bible commentaries and dictionaries that I looked up on-line tell us that the concept of heritage in the Bible intricately weaves together elements of spiritual legacy, identity, and community responsibility. Heritage signifies not just the physical lineage but also the spiritual and moral teachings imparted through generations. In Deuteronomy 6:6-7, it is commanded that the words of God should be impressed upon the hearts of children, demonstrating the importance of actively passing down faith and instruction. This act not only preserves the memory of God’s covenant but also promises prosperity and blessing for future generations, accentuating the communal aspect of faith. The collective memory of God’s actions, seen in the recounting of events such as the Exodus, serves as a reminder of both God’s unwavering faithfulness and the vital role of heritage in fostering a strong identity among the people of Israel. Additionally, the Bible portrays heritage as a divine gift that carries with it both privilege and responsibility.

More than once I have made reference in the blog, and in other writing about the heritage of faith and Christian example that I was blessed to have received from my Grandpa Murphy. I accept that we have to lay hold of that heritage so that it takes effect in our lives. We can set the example but those who follow on behind must claim the heritage for themselves. But its certainly a treasure worth passing on and claiming. In its past, Scotland has had an awesome spiritual heritage which has of late been sadly neglected by many. In reality if we were left a valuable legacy by someone in their will, which would change our life, we would certainly be quick to claim it wouldn’t we? The only thing we can do as Christians is to live the life and let Christ be seen in us so that the treasure that we have in Him is seen by others who will then want it for themselves.

Dear Lord,

I am grateful for the heritage of teaching and example I have had from others who have gone before. May the treasure we have be reflected in the way that we live so that it is attractive to others who will want to share in that inheritance. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
