26 October 2023 – What have I learned today?

Titus Chapter 1: Verse 1 (NIV)

Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ to further the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness.

What struck me about this translation of the introduction in Paul’s letter to Titus is the description of Paul’s calling – to further the faith of God’s elect. He was to encourage and teach the newly established churches, giving them a good grounding that would allow them to mature and stand in the faith, even when he was no longer around to lead and guide them. Indeed, by his own example, he taught them how to rely on the Lord, not on people.

I’m sure that many of us have had friends, pastors or ministers, who have encouraged us to explore our faith and seek a deeper relationship with God, just as we may have had people in other aspects of our life who have done their best to encourage us to prosper. I have been blessed indeed both in my Christian faith and in my working career to have those who went out of their way for me, and took me under their wing.

And as we mature in faith, we should also do what we can to encourage those newer in the faith as they take their first steps so that they too will grow healthy and strong spiritually. Paul certainly fulfilled his calling and through his letters is still encouraging us today to grow and further our faith. What a legacy!

Dear Lord,

Thank You for those who have used who encouraged and strengthened me in my Christian walk. Although some are now with You, their wisdom and example remain with me still, and I am forever grateful. May I do my best to encourage others to further their faith in You. I ask In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
