27 February 2024 – What have I learned today?

Psalm 27: Verse 5 (NIV-UK)

For in the day of trouble
    he will keep me safe in his dwelling;
he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent
    and set me high upon a rock.

What a reassuring verse this is! David is not saying that followers of God will never experience times of trouble or difficulty; indeed, he talks about when the day of trouble comes. However, he says that God himself will look after him and hide him in his sacred place placing him on a rock that is completely solid, even when everything else round about is crumbling. God is completely steadfast and reliable, but also personal.

This verse is also a reminder why we should never stay away from God and church during times of difficulty. By doing so we are actually denying ourselves the comfort and encouragement that we can find when we come to spend time with God in a place of worship. I know of someone at this time who is facing a very difficult medical diagnosis which is possibly terminal, yet she has testified of the comfort and strength she has found in coming to church. That confirms the testimony of David written thousands of years before.

Dear Lord,

Help me to draw near to You at all times, but especially when I am facing difficult or troubled times. Thank You that Your care is personal to me, even although You are God of all things. You are my God. Help me to worship You even when I am feeling down. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
