Titus chapter 3 verse 9(NIV)
But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless.
Yesterday we looked at how we should set an example in the way we live our Christian lives. We also need to extend that to the way we deal with others who may have a different opinion on some doctrinal issues. We need to be wise and act with discretion on these things. Arguments rarely achieve anything.
I was reminded when thinking of this today of a lovely old gentleman called Charlie, who as a Jehovah’s Witness, used to call regularly at my door. I always tried not to get into too many doctrinal discussions with him. Instead I preferred to share testimony of all the things that the Lord has done for me. It seemed to strike a chord and he told me he was impressed with my beliefs. He kept coming back as long as he was able. I hope our discussions challenged him. I’m certain they were more profitable than arguing about our differences.
Dear Lord,
Help me to act with wisdom and discretion when in discussion with others on matters of doctrine. Help me to speak the truth with compassion and respect. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
