Job chapter 13 verse 15 (NIV)
Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him;
I will surely defend my ways to his face.
Hebrews chapter 6 verse 19 (NIV)
We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain.
Job’s friends were condemning him, his wife in due time, would even tell him to curse God and die. Yet here we see that Job’s trust I God would be unshakeable, even if God was to slay him. What faith!
We also read in the book of Hebrews that because of the work of Jesus, we too can have an anchor to hold us even in the most difficult of circumstances. Job’s friends were beginning to cast him adrift as a lost cause. But Job held on to his faith. Jesus too will never cast us adrift.
As I was pondering today’s verses, the words of an old hymn came into my mind – My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus’ Name.
On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand.
All other ground is sinking sand.
When darkness veils his lovely face
I rest on His unchanging grace.
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.
His oath, his covenant, his blood
Supports me in the ‘whelming flood.
When all around my soul gives way
He then is all my hope and stay.
On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand.
All other ground is sinking sand.
When He shall come with trumpet sound
Oh may I then in Him be found.
Dressed in his righteousness alone
Faultless to stand before the throne.
People may put their hope and trust in different things, which, under duress, may come to nothing. But when all else fails we can put our hope in Christ. He will NEVER let us go.
Dear Lord,
Thank You for the assurance that Job had, even when he didn’t know how things would yet unfold. May I know that same strength and assurance because of everything Jesus has done for me. I ask in His Name. Amen.
