29 July 2025 – What have I learned today?

Psalm 89 verses 34-37 (NIV)

I will not violate my covenant

   or alter what my lips have uttered.

Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness—

   and I will not lie to David—

 that his line will continue forever

   and his throne endure before me like the sun;

Numbers chapter 23 verse 19 (NIV)

God is not human, that he should lie,
    not a human being, that he should change his mind.
Does he speak and then not act?
    Does he promise and not fulfill?

These verses  in Psalm 89 this morning caught my attention and reminded me of the similar verses in the book of Numbers. Reassuring verses indeed that remind us that God’s word and His promises are utterly trustworthy!

The verses in Psalms were written later. We read in the verses immediately preceding these in Psalm 89, that God says He will not renege on those promises, even if He also has to punish His people for their sin. That’s how solid and reliable His promises are. It’s us that are most often the issue. For one thing we have got used to instant gratification and we don’t like having to wait. God’s promise to David was not fulfilled until the coming of Jesus. We therefore need sometimes and to be patient. We also need to be obedient. If there is any conditional element in a promise God has made then He will expect us to play our part. If we don’t then we are tying God’s hands. Let’s make sure we don’t drag our feet and let God fulfil that promise.

These verses today are an encouragement. We might feel that nothing is happening. Some people may even feel overlooked. Nevertheless we can take heart. If God has spoken, He will keep His word. Let’s make sure though that we don’t put any detours in His way as a consequence of our disobedience.

Dear Lord,

Thank You for this reminder of Your steadfast love and faithfulness. Help me to be faithful in my obedience. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
