Philippians Chapter 1: Verses 27-28 (NIV)

Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved—and that by God.

2 Timothy Chapter 4: Verse 3 (NIV)

For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

Romans Chapter 12: Verse 18

If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.

Paul was in prison for speaking out and preaching the Gospel. He had already told the Philippians how His testimony was bringing courage and boldness to others and He was exhorting them to be equally as bold in the face of opposition.

In the west, we live in a culture where people feel they want to voice their own opinion and live as they please. But somehow, we have come to the place where many are reluctant to accept someone else’s views and lifestyles. The consequence of this means that people may be reluctant to speak out for fear of causing offence. Paul knew that. That’s why he counselled the Philippians to stand together.

We can find great strength and encouragement being able to stand together with other believers, particularly those we share fellowship with.

As Christians we know that we can stand on the Word of God. It’s reliable and unchanging. That means we need to stand firm. If other people find that offensive, we need to leave that to the Lord to take care of, but we need to be careful not to knowingly antagonise others, and if possible, leave at peace with them. It can be done without compromising our faith. Perhaps that’s why Jesus taught that we should turn the other cheek.

Dear Lord,

Help me to be bold for the sake of the Gospel, even if others don’t agree. But help me to be sensitive to the moving of the Spirit so that don’t allow my emotions and personality to get in the way. That way it ensures that it is the light of Christ that is being seen, and not me. And that takes the pressure off from wondering what people think. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
