Job chapter 21 verses 14-16 (NIV)
Yet they say to God, ‘Leave us alone!
We have no desire to know your ways.
Who is the Almighty, that we should serve him?
What would we gain by praying to him?’
But their prosperity is not in their own hands,
so I stand aloof from the plans of the wicked.
Sometimes it’s difficult not to respond or retaliate when people say that they are doing very nicely without any need for God, thank you very much. On the surface of things that may well seem true, but we don’t always see the full picture of what’s going on in people’s lives. Circumstances can change in a heartbeat. As Job says, prosperity is not in their hands. Neither are lots of other circumstances.
In instances when people dismiss their need for God, they are usually, at that time, not in a place to hear of our experience. That being so, sometimes we need to heed Job’s advice and stay aloof. God is more than capable of doing His own work in people’s lives.
Dear Lord,
Thank You for reminding me that all things are in Your hands. Help me to know when to act and when to stand back. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
