1 Samuel Chapter 30: Verse 6 (NIV)
David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the Lord his God.
This chapter in David’s life is another lesson for me on how not to let my emotions dominate my circumstances. All of the fighting men were rightly distressed at the capture of their families. David was not exempt from this. The men were in danger of letting their bitterness at their circumstances dictate their actions. Thankfully, David looked to God for the strength and direction to deal with the situation. Under God’s guidance all the families were returned to their homes.
Christians are not exempt from difficult circumstances, but we too have a choice to make about the way that we handle them. Do we let our emotions dictate our response, or like David, find strength in God?
Dear Lord,
Thank You that when we need strength, we can find it in You. Help me to keep my emotions in check when there are important decisions to be made. I realise that when I make decisions in Your strength, they are likely to be wise and not ones I will regret. Thank You for being there in good times and difficult ones. Amen.
