31 October 2023 – What have I learned today?

We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.

Sometimes we aren’t paying close attention to what someone else is saying. Perhaps we are busy multitasking and trying to get organised because there is so much to be done. Consequently, we only hear part of the information, or we might even get the wrong end of the stick. That sometimes results in hilarious misunderstandings which make us laugh. But sadly, it can also lead to the kind of misunderstandings that cause upset and falling out, especially if we go off in the huff.

God’s word to us is always clear and straightforward, but sometimes we don’t pay it the close attention that we should, or we go selectively deaf, and only pay attention to the things we want to hear. If we carry on in that manner then gradually, we find it easier and easier to compromise, even with the word of God. That’s when we find ourselves in situations that were never in God’s plan for us.

We don’t like it when we know someone is only going through the motions of listening to what we have to say. How do we think God feels when we are only half-heartedly paying attention to what He has to say, or just going through the motions of the Christian life? God has done so much for us; He only has our best in mind. And so, if He wants to teach us something it’s worth sitting up and paying attention.

Dear Lord,

Your ear is always open to my prayer. You’re never too busy to listen to me. Help me not to be half-hearted in following the way You have mapped out for me, knowing that it’s the best. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
