Hebrews chapter 2 verses 16-18 (NIV)
For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
These verses are a reminder of just how much Jesus loves us. As we are told, it’s not the angels he helps, but fallen humanity. And He loved us so much that He became like us so that He could truly empathise with and help us. Sometimes when we are trying to support people in difficult situations, we might say to them that we know how they feel. That’s not always helpful, unless we have walked on a similar path. Jesus has, and He is a strong and steadfast support for us in every situation.
Dear Lord,
I’m grateful to have a High priest who can identity with me in my weakness. Help me to be compassionate and supportive to others then in the same way as I have received from You. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
