Mark Chapter 12 verse 24 (NIV)
Jesus replied, “Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God?
In this chapter, first the Pharisees and then the Sadducees tried to catch Jesus out. Both groups were well versed in the Scriptures. In this verse we read that Jesus rebuked the Sadducees for their lack of understanding of the Scriptures. It’s a reminder to us that it’s not enough to know what the Bible teaches, but also to apply it to our lives. However, in His rebuke, Jesus mentioned something else. He told them that knowing the Scriptures is not enough. They also needed to know the power of God. Surely also with us. It is right and proper that we should be well versed in the Bible’s teaching. It is the inspired Word of God. But God has given us the Holy Spirit so that we would know and live in the power of God. We need to let the word of God work in our heart, and allow the Holy Spirit to move through us in power. It’s not either or. It’s both.
Dear Lord,
Thank You that we have access to Your word in the Bible and it’s instruction, but also for the gift of Your Holy Spirit. Help me not to stifle His moving through my life in power. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
