Psalm 116 – verses 12 – 14 (NIV)
What shall I return to the LORD
for all his goodness to me? I will lift up the cup of salvation
and call on the name of the LORD.
I will fulfill my vows to the LORD
in the presence of all his people.
The psalmist ponders here on what he can offer to the Lord in return for all of His goodness. He concludes that what God wants from us is to spend time before Him and calling upon Him. In other words to ensure that He is included in every part of our lives. Secondly that we are obedient to His commands and that where we have made a promise to Him we will keep it. He doesn’t require elaborate gestures. He wants us to have a willing heart and total obedience to His ways and commands.
