Luke Chapter 10 – Verses 25-29 (NLT Translation)
One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?”
Jesus replied, “What does the law of Moses say? How do you read it?”
The man answered, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
“Right!” Jesus told him. “Do this and you will live!”
The man wanted to justify his actions, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
The expert in religious law set out to test Jesus. And even although it appeared that he was doing all that the law required, he still wanted to justify his actions. His heart was not in the right place.
We too can go through the motions of doing all the right things, but our heart isn’t in it. We cant fool Jesus though; He knows our heart. If we feel we have to justify our actions, it might be wise to look at our motives.
Dear Lord,
Help me to keep my heart right before You, and may my motives only be to please and glorify Your name. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
