5 July 2025 – What have I learned today?

Acts chapter 24 verse 22 (NIV)

Then Felix, who was well acquainted with the Way, adjourned the proceedings. “When Lysias the commander comes,” he said, “I will decide your case.”

Acts chapter 24 verse 25 (NIV)

As Paul talked about righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and said, “That’s enough for now! You may leave. When I find it convenient, I will send for you.”

It seems Felix knew all about the Christian faith; in fact we’re told he was well acquainted with it. But that didn’t make him a follower. When Paul spoke about things Felix found hard to hear, he sent Paul away until a more” convenient” time. That suggests to me that God was speaking to Felix through Paul, and had put His finger on the things Felix needed to change. Sadly, Felix had no intention of doing so, although clearly convicted, so he sent Paul away.

How often have we come across people who are quite interested in the Christian faith, but when it comes down to it, they don’t really want to follow God’s ways if they have to change their behaviour. Even as Christians we may sometimes be impressed by a good sermon, but a good sermon isn’t really any good if we don’t act on it. God isn’t interest in convenience, only obedience.

Dear Lord,

Help me to act on the things that you put your finger on in my life, and not disregard your instruction until a time that is more convenient for me. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
