7 January 2023 – what have I learned today?

Matthew Chapter 6: Verses 1-4 (NLT Version)

Watch out! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in Heaven. When you give to someone in need, don’t do as the hypocrites do – blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I tell you the truth, they have received all the reward they will ever get.

But when you give to someone in need, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.

We share so much of our lives on social media. Its easy to upload in an instant – where we’ve been, what we’ve done, who we’ve met, and what we’re doing next. Interesting for our family and friends we hope.

But maybe not always helpful if our friends are having a difficult time. Is it rubbing salt in the wound if we wax lyrical about our forthcoming holiday and they have decided to do without? It is good to share our happy times, and also, where appropriate how we may have dealt with past struggles, but sometimes we might just need to give a little more thought about what we share publicly.  Sometimes there are times when its right to say nothing.

Dear God,

Thank you that you see and know all things, and you care about everything I do and what happens in my life. Help me to be a considerate friend to others and aware of their feelings as much as my own.

I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
