2 Kings chapter 14 verse 24 (NIV)
He did evil in the eyes of the LORD and did not turn away from any of the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit.
This verse was repeated four times in the Chapter and a half that was my Old Testament reading for today. I was struck by what a terrible legacy Jereboam son of Nebat had left, setting such a bad example to at least four of his descendants that they followed in his footsteps turning away from God and doing evil.
What sort of legacy do we want to leave? I was at two funerals last week. Both people leave behind them a legacy of faith and trust in God. On both days the church was full of people who had been touched by both of these lovely Christians. At the second funeral, a card and pen had been left for us to write down a memory of our friend which his family would then keep. I wrote that he was an encourager. I know what sort of legacy I want to leave, and it’s more like my friend and not like Jeroboam.
Dear Lord,
Help me leave a legacy that brings You glory and touches the lives who come behind me. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
