8 January 2026 – What have I learned today?

Matthew chapter 7 verses 21 – 23 (NIV)

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.  Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’  Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’”

Still continuing on the same theme. Jesus issues a warning to His disciples, and to us, that His Father is not interested in us rushing around and doing things for Him of our own accord, the thing that is expected of us is that we do His will. Even though we may do really good things on God’s behalf, if we don’t do what God asks of us, it’s not really of benefit to us. I’m reminded that even King Saul was counted amongst the prophets of the time, he lost the favour of God because of his disobedience.

Dear Lord,

Help me to remember what Samuel said to Saul that to obey is better than sacrifice, and to harken better than the fat of lambs. I ask in Jesus name. Amen.
