Matthew Chapter 8: Verses 2-3 (NLT Version)

Suddenly, a man with leprosy approached him and knelt before him. “Lord,” the man said, “If you are willing you can heal me and make me clean.” Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. “Be healed!” And instantly the leprosy disappeared.

Lepers at that time were untouchable. They were considered unclean and isolated from their families, shunned by all of society. This leper had faith that Jesus could heal him. There’s no doubt in the tone of the words that he speaks – “You can heal me…” But he couches that with the words, “If you are willing…” Perhaps because he was used to people turning away from him.

Jesus proves that He is indeed willing, and not just by talking to the man. Saying the words, “Be healed” would have been enough. But Jesus went even further. First, He reached out and touched the man. In the eyes of the law that would have made Jesus unclean for a period.

Who knows when the man last felt a human touch? Jesus healed the man from leprosy, but by that touch He also healed the man’s hurt and loneliness, and restored the man’s worth. Jesus healed the whole man. He saw beyond the leprosy and dealt with all the man’s needs.

Jesus is always willing to meet our need, but He sees the whole picture. He sees the things that no one else sees and deals with them as well as the more obvious need. However, we need to be brave enough to come and ask Him for the help we need. It would have taken a lot of courage for the leper to approach Jesus. Other people would have crossed the road when they saw him coming.

It might cost us a lot to come to Jesus and ask for help, but He is more than willing. Am I willing to humble myself and ask?

Dear God,

Thank you for the love and compassion of Jesus, who understands the needs of our heart, and looks beyond the face we sometimes present to the world. Thank you that He was willing to put everything aside to help us. May I never be too proud to come to you for the help you offer.

I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
