9 January 2026 – What have I learned today?

Genesis chapter 19 verses 14 – 16 (NIV)

So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry his daughters. He said, “Hurry and get out of this place, because the LORD is about to destroy the city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was joking. With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished.” When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the LORD was merciful to them.

Lot went to warn his future sons-in-law of the forthcoming judgement but they laughed at him. It cost them their lives. Lot was right to warn them, but I can’t help but wonder if his life hadn’t inspired them to trust God. He had been well integrated into the life of the city, and he’d also offered his daughters to a mob. It’s a reminder that our lives speak of our testimony often more than our words do.

When God speaks to us, He expects us to listen and obey. If we hesitate before acting, sometimes doubt can creep in. In this instance, because God had promised to save Lot, the visitors grabbed them by the hand and led them where to go. Sometimes, God wants to see if we will take Him at His word and take that first step of faith. When we do, we will find that we are guided and helped on the way by the Holy Spirit.

Dear Lord,

Thank You for the mercy that You show to us. Help me to guard my testimony and to act on Your word without delay. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
