9 October 2025 – What have I learned today?

1 Thessalonians Chapter 1 verses 6-7 (NIV)

You became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia.

The Thessalonians became an example to other new believers in their region, in the midst, it would appear, of great suffering. We’re told that in spite of their circumstances they welcomed the message with great joy. Do we welcome what God has to say to us in a time of trial or suffering? Or are we too focused on our circumstances in such times, to listen to what the Lord would say to us, and accept it with joy. Perhaps if we did so, we would face our difficulties or trials with a completely different attitude.

Dear Lord,

Often it’s easier to feel sorry for ourselves in difficult times rather than accepting Your word with great joy in those circumstances. Help me to see the benefit of finding Your joy, even if it goes against our very nature. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
