Genesis Chapter 45 – Verses 7-8 (NLT Translation)
“God has sent me ahead of you to keep you and your families alive and to preserve many survivors. So it was God who sent me here not you! And he is the one who made me advisor to Pharaoh – the manager of his entire palace and governor of all Egypt.”
Joseph was able to look back over his life and see how God had used his situation to have an amazing and far-reaching impact. Sometimes the circumstances that we find ourselves in are of our own making, but often they’re not. God can use them either way to impact not just our lives, but those who cross our paths.
Maybe, however, we need to change our mindset when we are going through a trying time. I recently read about a man who prayed, “ Lord, what is it that You are trying to teach me through this?” Perhaps I need to pray that too instead of feeling sorry for myself. Surely its more beneficial to ask God, “How can You use this for good?” rather than just, “Why is this happening to me?”
There is no sign of bitterness in Joseph as he speaks with his brothers. He could have made a public spectacle of them, but he sent all his staff away and spoke to them in private. He had learned to bring his feelings to God and that’s why God was able to use him. I need to learn to bring my feelings and emotions before God when I’m struggling. It doesn’t do me any good to dwell on them, or to make a public show of them. But I can be totally open and honest with God, and He can handle whatever I say, even if I’m having a rant. He will never feel shocked, embarrassed or awkward.
I might think that nothing good can come out of a difficult tough situation, but thankfully God knows differently. I might not see it now, but looking back over past situations I can see God’s hand on them. He’ll be just the same the next time I’m finding it tough. How much more reassurance do I need!
Dear God,
Help me to bring all of my feelings and emotions to You. You understand me more than anyone else can. Help me to keep an open mind and heart so that I can learn what You want to teach me, no matter what circumstances I find myself in.
I pray in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
