22 January 2025 – What have I learned today?

Matthew chapter 15: verses 32 and 33 (NIV)

Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.” His disciples answered, “Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?”

Sometimes the Lord allows us to find ourselves in a situation similar to one we have been in before. Here we read of Jesus asking His disciples how they might feed a hungry crowd of 4000 men, plus women and children. Bible scholar believe that it is approximately six months after the feeding of the 5000. Had the disciples forgotten what had happened only months before? They give no sign of a different attitude. Was Jesus trying to test them? Was He disappointed by their response. Nonetheless He graciously moves and the people are fed.

If we do find ourselves in a familiar situation, perhaps we too need to remember what God taught us last time round. Perhaps He wants to see whether we will put into practice what He has taught us. Maybe this time we shouldn’t pray, “Lord, get me out of this,” rather, “Lord, last time You were with me, and this time You’re with me again, give me the grace to handle this situation the way You want me to.” Or, do we like the disciples, have short memories and have already forgotten what God has done for us in the past?

Dear Lord,

Help me to be careful to apply all You have taught me to the circumstances I may come across and not to forget all Your kindnesses and blessings of times past. I pray in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
