Psalm 72 verses 1-2 (NIV)
Endow the king with your justice, O God,
the royal son with your righteousness.
May he judge your people in righteousness,
your afflicted ones with justice.
1 Timothy chapter 2 verses 1-2 (NIV)
I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.
The heading for this psalm reads “Of Solomon” but I noticed that it ends by saying, “this concludes the prayers of David, son of Jesse.” that made me wonder if this was a prayer of David, at the end of his life, for his son Solomon who was going to succeed him. What did he pray? That the king would rule in righteousness and with justice. What an awesome thing to pray for for his son.
But Paul teaches Timothy that we too have a duty to pray for those in authority over us. So let’s remember this prayer of David and pray likewise.
Dear Lord,
I pray for those in authority over this country that they too might know righteousness and act with justice, and may those who know You reflect Your glory and know Your wisdom. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
