18 July 2024 – What have I learned today?

Amos chapter 7 verses 14-15( NIV)

Amos answered Amaziah, “I was neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees. But the LORD took me from tending the flock and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’

Amos was a shepherd. He had no aspirations to be a prophet. Indeed Shepherds were considered the lowest members of society. That’s why it was  unexpected good news that the angel came first to the shepherds when Jesus was born.

In spite of his status in society however, God had plans for Amos. God’s plan was that Amos would be a prophet. Amos may well have thought, “well who is going to listen to a mere shepherd.” But Amos was obedient to God. He spoke God’s word regardless of society’s opinion.

That’s a lesson for us too. We may not have any great opinion of ourselves. We might not see ourselves even with any great role in the church. Some people may not even have a very high opinion of us. But that doesn’t matter. It’s what God wants that matters, and our obedience to His plans. He will take of the rest, no matter what anyone else thinks.

Dear Lord,

Thank You that You are not interested in status or even ambition, unless that ambition is to be obedient and faithful to You. Help me to remember that it’s only Your approval I should be looking for. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
