James Chapter 2 verse 5 (NIV)

Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?

What does it mean to be “poor in the eyes of the world” as James mentions in this verse. Of course it can mean not having enough money to be able to live comfortably, but I think it can mean other things too. In this modern age what does the world think it means to be rich? As well as wealth, some may list success in business or career, status, looks, to name the most common. But though we may achieve these things and on the face of it appear to be rich, we know these things don’t always bring happiness or peace to lives.

James says the better goal is to be rich in faith. If we are rooted and grounded in our faith in God, then we will not easily flounder when hard times come. We can’t rely on the riches for which the world aspires, but we know that we can rely on the things of God, and in doing so we also can claim the inheritance that God has for us, one which cannot be lost or destroyed. God’s definition of rich is completely different from ours, but God’s riches are worth having.

Dear Lord,

Thank You for the riches that were bought for us by grace, as we are reminded that grace is God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. Help me to see things through Your eyes rather than the eyes of the world. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
