20 January 2026 – What have I learned today?

Genesis chapter 40 verses 14-15 (NIV)

But when all goes well with you, remember me and show me kindness; mention me to Pharaoh and get me out of this prison. I was forcibly carried off from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing to deserve being put in a dungeon.”

Genesis chapter 40 verse 23 (NIV)

The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him.

Joseph faithfully served, even in prison. God remained with him, and used him to speak to the two officials from Pharaoh’s household. When God’s word came to pass for the two officials, Joseph perhaps became optimistic that things might soon change after he asked the cupbearer to plead his case. Perhaps he saw the chance of a literal open door. Surely God was making a way for him. Except the cupbearer forgot. It was not yet God’s time for Joseph to fulfil those dreams God had given him years before. Imagine the disappointment as days stretched into years. I wonder what Joseph thought? We’re not told, but it seems he must have continued to trust God, and serve as he had done previously for when the call came, a full two years later, he was ready.

He could have felt sorry for himself and given up, but when the summons came to appear before Pharaoh, apart from a wash, shave and a change of clothes, he did so, confident in God’s hand in the situation. He seized the situation when the time came.

Sometimes we too might think a door is opening for us in a particular situation, only to find that it doesn’t come to pass the way we hoped. How do we handle our disappointment? Do we give it to God, trusting that His timing is perfect? Or in our disappointment, do we lose the sharpness and readiness that God wants us to have, so that He can pick us up and use us whenever He chooses? That’s the challenge for us. But we have Joseph’s example to prove that it’s possible.

Dear Lord,

There’s so much we can learn from Joseph. May I have his trust and patience, and his stickability so that I can be an effective tool in Your hands whenever You choose. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
