John Chapter 7 verses 45-52 (NIV)
Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and the Pharisees, who asked them, “Why didn’t you bring him in?” “No one ever spoke the way this man does,” the guards replied. “You mean he has deceived you also?” the Pharisees retorted. “Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him? No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them.” Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, “Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?”
They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee.”
The Temple guards recognised Jesus’ anointing. They were ridiculed by those who should also have done so. Here too we see Nicodemus now being bold enough to speak up for Jesus, yet he too was dismissed.
There will be those who claim to know the truth yet who will not recognise it. Jesus Himself said, “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Its ironic that the religious leaders taunted Nicodemus, telling Him to *look into it” for if they had taken their own advice they would have found out that Jesus had been born in Bethlehem. If we are in any doubt about someone’s claims or teaching we should certainly look into it and also seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit. He will always lead us to Jesus and will not allow us to be led astray.
Dear Lord,
Thank You that when our hearts are willing, You allow us to see and experience Your anointing. Thank You for also giving us the Holy Spirit to direct and guide us when we are uncertain. Help me to follow His guidance. I pray in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
