2 Samuel chapter 2 verse 1 (NIV)
In the course of time, David inquired of the LORD. “Shall I go up to one of the towns of Judah?” he asked. The LORD said, “Go up.”David asked, “Where shall I go?”“To Hebron,” the LORD answered.
David had been anointed by Samuel as the next king of Israel whilst he was a very young man. This did not come to pass for a considerable time. Scholars believe that there was about fourteen years between his anointing and his ascension to the throne. It wasn’t an easy fourteen years either.
When God calls us to a particular work, His timing is always perfect. We may step into the work almost immediately, or we may have a season of preparation before God gives us the sign that the time is now.
Finally, and with a humble and sorrowful heart over the deaths of Saul and Jonathan, David is about to enter the next step on his life’s journey. He starts it of right by seeking God’s direction, and not just generally, but very specifically.
We should learn from that. We will all enter new and different seasons in our own lives and we should always seek God’s direction.
Dear Lord,
Thank You for reminding me that Your timing is always perfect, even if I have to wait to move into whatever it is You have for me to do. May I always follow David’s example in seeking Your direction and guidance. I ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
