2 Samuel chapter 5 verses 6-7 (NIV)
The king and his men marched to Jerusalem to attack the Jebusites, who lived there. The Jebusites said to David, “You will not get in here; even the blind and the lame can ward you off.” They thought, “David cannot get in here.” Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion —which is the City of David.
David’s enemies took the strength of their fortress like city as security. They took it for granted and even taunted David about it. If anything they rested on their laurels. But God had plans for the city of Jerusalem which were far greater than the obstacles which seemed to be in David’s way. God’s response on David’s behalf can be seen on one word – “Nevertheless.”
Sometimes the obstacles that stand in our way can make us doubt whether we are on the right road. But if we are certain that we are completely following God’s will for us, we too can take comfort in that “nevertheless.”
Dear Lord,
Thank You for reminding me of the power of Your “nevertheless.” In spite of the natural odds, we read, “Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion which is the City of David.” Thank You that Your plans for us will not be thwarted by the obstacles that may appear to stand in our way. Amen.
